Last Thursday, Mattel announced that the new Barbie line will have 33 dolls- including 4 different body shapes, 7 skin tones, 22 eye colors and 24 hairstyles. This is huge!
Barbie has been an integral part of young girls' lives since 1959. While the designers have made small movements in the past toward recognizing the differences in women, this single move will be paramount in our future generations of women.
The Barbie brand has taken a lot of grief over the years for representing a nearly impossible body style for young women.
Good to see that things are changing.
"We have to let girls know it doesn't matter what shape you come in, that anything is possible," said Tania Missad, director of consumer insights for Barbie.
We like to focus on the "anything is possible" part.
Women are strong. Women are capable. Women can do anything.
Being a woman is about waking up, rising up, and greeting the day with an open mind and get it done attitude. It's about being strong, independent, and resilient.
Being a woman is about being in tune with yourself and your purpose, and supporting other women in theirs.
We think the new Barbie line reflects this quite well.
